andrea mitchell live in washington where we are awaiting hamid karzai and president obama who will be addressing reporters in the east room following their meetings on the pace of the u.s. troop withdrawals. one big disagreement? the white house suggestion this week of a zero option, a withdrawal of all u.s. troops after 2014 leaving no residual force at all, but, first, the big domestic issue here at home. what to do about gun violence. the white house is pushing back hard on suggestions that they do not believe they can win a ban on assault weapons, and are focussing on other options. in fact, a senior administration official tells me within the hour that an assault weapons ban and background checks are both going to be in the final set of proposals that go to the president despite all reports to the controversy. the nra president who met with vice president biden yesterday is drawing a hard line on assault weapons. >> we don't think that a ban on so-called assault weapons, which hasn't worked in the past, is going to work this time. we think manufacture those are feel good

of tomorrow's meeting here in d.c.? >> reporter: i think both sides, both president hamid karzai and president obama will want to walk away from this week's meeting with a clearer picture of how many troops will remain in afghanistan post 2014. there are roughly 66,000 troops based here in afghanistan. both sides will want a clearer picture of what that looks like beyond the pullout. some numbers are reported being considered by the obama administration are 3,000, 6,000 and 9,000. those are considerably smaller levels than the numbers that were proposed by general john allen who is the head commander here in afghanistan for the u.s. forces. he suggested that the troop level should be 6,000 to 20,000. the thinking is if there is a smaller contingent they will assume more of a nimble and more specialops type of deal. if there is a larger contention then they will assume more conventional roles. now, a lot of this may hinge on this notion of immunity. president karzai will have to decide if he will grant immunity for whatever troops remain here. that would give legal protection for troops based h

. >> thank you, everybody. >> that was afghan president hamid karzai fielding a question sort of from our very own mike viqueira. president karzai is in washington this week for talks with top lawmakers on capitol hill. we just saw him there getting a nice pat on the hand from republican senate leader mitch mcconnell. tomorrow he meets with the president at the white house. let's join kristin welker. kristin, looking forward to tomorrow's meeting with hamid karzai, what are the president and the white house hoping to get out of the afghan president? >> reporter: well, good afternoon, martin. i think, first of all, the issue that mike viqueira brought up is going to be a key topic here, which are troop levels. the white house earlier this week signaling that they would be open to withdrawing all residual troops after 2014 or even having a smaller troop presence there than initially thought. that will undoubtedly be a key topic of conversation between president obama and president karzai and they will really be meeting to assess the situation there, the training of afghan forces. of course,

, with hamid karzai. he is on his way to washington already before his friday meeting with the president. mr. karzai gets the privilege of one of the only in-person meetings that secretary of state hillary clinton is taking all this week after she returned to the office this week following her very scary concussion and blood clot. of course, the job of replacing hillary clinton as secretary of state had looked early on like it was going to go to this woman, a current ambassador to the united nation, susan rice. susan rice is a long-time friend and ally of the president whose name was floated very early on as a favorite for secretary of state. ultimately, though, before anybody was nominated for the position, the white house sort of backed down from the prospect of nominating her. they allowed her to take her name out of the running when republicans attacked her for the grave, grave crime of saying something wrong on sunday morning talk shows. something that by the way turned out to be mostly correct. but never mind, they criticized her anyway, and the white house did not back her up in the f
